In 1986, Catherine "Kay" Hawthorne joined textile historian Clarita Anderson in an endeavor to document Jacquard-woven coverlets. The two collaborated on contacting state and local museums, historical societies, and private collectors whom agreed to help with the creation of a coverlet database. Over the years, the two women amassed a database of over 14,000 textiles for the University of Maryland.
